Last week was totally chaotic. It started with me saying “goodbye” to my good hosts Brian and Suzzanna and headed off to finally “move in” to where I was going to be living. I put this in quotes because it mostly consisted of carting in my air mattress and few clothes that weren’t in storage. Fortunately, I only had a couple of days before the movers finally retrieved all my belongings from storage. It’s great to have those items back and it was glorious to finally be able to sleep in a bed that wasn’t filled with air. We didn’t get internet until Sunday, which did suck but was probably a good thing since the only thing left to do was unpack and sure enough that is what was done. I can honestly say the apartment has come a long way since Wed afternoon and we are pretty much all moved in. There are a few final things that need to be dealt with but for the most part it’s true. Now the only thing left is for myself to assimilate to my new home. I think I’m off to a good start thus far, I went to a “BBQ” (I use that term loosely because SF BBQ’s never seem to consist of an actual backyard, it’s mainly people eating grilled food with the associated BBQ foods indoors which to me makes it more of a dinner party type thing than a BBQ) on Friday and than later hooked up with Kristy and other fellow IU people for some heavy drinking. Which was followed by a stint in the hot tub in my complex followed by a stint in the sauna (it was cold outside and we had to dry off somehow! drunken logic is never really logical). Unfortunately, my ears got filled with water and I still don’t seem to be hearing quite properly, attempts at hunting down who my actual insurance company is and where my cards are has proven futile up to this point, but tomorrow is another day and at least now I have the right people to harass into action!
The rest of the weekend was pretty relaxing, lots of sleep, some exploring, and more relaxation (hey I earned it). There was also some drinking at a really cool bar that starts with a Z somewhere in the Mission on what I think is Duboce close to a Safeway on what should be Church. Then there was also some very tasty sushi! It would seem the social aspect of things is going quite well, until you take into consideration that this has all pretty much revolved around one person which means that I definitely need to make some more friends to hang out with. Not that I’m anti Chris, but I’m sure he’s probably going to become quite sick of me as he’s one of few outlets into the elusive outer social world. There’s also this whole other aspect of just getting my life into order which also needs to be dealt with this week. You know changing address, finding Dr’s, where is the closest bank branch, balancing the checkbook, all of that boring stuff that is just annoying when it’s not already set up and you can go about your routine. I know everything will get settled soon, but I’ve never been a patient person and I’m ready for it to happen now. I guess that means I just have to work extra hard at getting everything accomplished, which the hour train ride is definite help in that department (that’s where I am right now! well not RIGHT now as I don’t actually have internet on the train (soon to be resolved) but right now as in “I’m typing in notepad right now to post this later”). Still, it’s one less thing I have to do later. I do want to get my Spanish installed on this thing so that I can continue to learn during my commute. The possibilites are endless when you are stuck in a seat for 2 hours everyday with not much to distract you.
Hope everyone else had a great 4th as well, I’m hoping to post some pictures tonight (none of the apartment yet, I have a bunch for before I moved that need to get up there) and that my friends is the end of my train ride.
